Daily writing prompt
Have you ever performed on stage or given a speech?

Have you ever stood in front of a crowd, your heart pounding like a heavy metal drummer at full volume, and wondered if your deodorant was up to the task? Of course, you have. Public speaking is practically a rite of passage. But let me tell you, darling, I’ve been there, done that, and bought the T-shirt (and maybe even DJ’d the merch table afterward).

Doreys Dj and Christmas Cookie Table

Lights, Mic, Action: My DJ Days

Picture this: young me, with a voice smoother than a freshly iced cupcake, rocking the airwaves as a radio DJ. I had all the confidence in the world because, let’s be honest, you can’t see the audience when you’re in a studio. It’s just you, a microphone, and the occasional request from someone who really loves “Stairway to Heaven.” Hosting music events? Done that too. It’s like karaoke night, but you’re the one making sure the vibe stays electric and nobody cries over a missed high note.

Dorey Paralegal

From DJ to Debate Queen

Fast forward a few years, and I found myself trading in my headphones for legal briefs. My job as a senior litigation paralegal meant drafting and helping to make pitches, argue points, and negotiate like my holiday shopping budget depended on it (spoiler alert: it usually did). A courtroom is just another stage, but with less applause and more objections. I’ve helped deliver arguments so convincing they’d make a Hallmark movie seem logical, and I’ve faced tough crowds who wouldn’t know a good point if it tap-danced in front of them.

What I’ve Learned About Owning the Stage

  1. Fake It ‘Til You Make It: Confidence is key. Or at least pretending to have it until you stop hyperventilating.
  2. Know Your Audience: Whether you’re spinning records or defending a motion, read the room. No one wants to hear a 12-minute monologue when all they came for is the snacks.
  3. Have a Backup Plan: Something will always go wrong. Microphones die, judges glare, and sometimes, people just don’t laugh at your jokes. Shocking, I know.

Share Your Stage Stories!

Have you ever been in the spotlight? Whether you were channeling your inner Shakespeare or just trying to survive a best man’s speech, I want to hear all about it. Bonus points if your story involves public karaoke and/or pie.

Dorey Duncan Scott Senior Litigation Paralegal
Hi! I’m Dorey Duncan Scott, a mother of three, wife and fashion entrepreneur. I started my career in fashion back in the early 90’s when I did print, still and runway modeling. I studied Fashion Merchandising, Music Business and Marketing, while also obtaining certificates in such industry-necessary areas such as make-up, styling and runway choreography. In addition, I had work as a spokesmodel for several brands, appearing in print and in person. As a former model, turned senior litigation paralegal, artist manager and on-air personality with a passion for fashion, beauty, and personal development, I bring a unique combination of style, strategic thinking, and legal expertise to my work. My years navigating the legal world have sharpened my attention to detail, while my experience and passion for fashion, beauty, and personal development drives my desire to help others feel empowered and help them in their journey toward self-empowerment. My experience in the fashion world has taught me the power of confidence.
