Playful Moments Dances with Cookies
Daily writing prompt
What was the last thing you did for play or fun?

When Was the Last Time You Had Fun Just for the Sake of It?

Play. It’s such a whimsical word, isn’t it? Yet, as adults, it often gets shoved into the forgotten corners of our minds, like an old toy gathering dust in the attic. When was the last time you truly played? Not “scheduled fun” or a carefully orchestrated social event, but genuine, unfiltered, silly play that made you feel like a carefree kid again?

For me, the last time I played just for fun was during an impromptu baking session that turned into a flour-fueled kitchen dance party. It started innocently enough—I planned to whip up some cookies, thinking I’d channel my inner Martha Stewart. But somewhere between creaming the butter and sifting the flour, my favorite playlist came on. Suddenly, I wasn’t baking anymore; I was performing. Using a spatula as a microphone, twirling in a cloud of powdered sugar, and shamelessly attempting a TikTok trend I had no business trying.

The cookies? Burnt beyond recognition. The kitchen? A complete disaster zone. My mood? Through the roof. And as I stood there laughing at the chaos, I realized how rare moments like these have become.

Why is it that as we grow older, we trade spontaneity for structure? Play for productivity? Fun becomes something we have to “earn,” and even then, it’s often packaged into polished, Instagram-worthy outings or events. But here’s the thing: play isn’t frivolous—it’s essential. It’s how we reset, reconnect, and remember what it feels like to just be.

Think about it: When was the last time you laughed so hard your stomach hurt? When was the last time you let go of your to-do list and did something just because it made you happy? If it’s been a while, consider this your official permission slip to embrace play.

Go build a pillow fort. Dance in your kitchen like no one’s watching. Start a snowball fight (or, if you live somewhere warmer, a water balloon battle). Doodle silly cartoons on a notepad. Whatever it is, make it messy, joyful, and completely unproductive.

And here’s a little challenge: After you’ve done it, come back and tell me about it. What was the last thing you did purely for fun? Or better yet, what are you planning to do next? Share your story in the comments below—it might just inspire someone else to hit pause on adulthood and dive headfirst into a little playful chaos.

Because life’s too short to keep our inner child in time-out. Go play. Make a mess. Laugh until you snort. And if you burn the cookies, I promise, it’s totally worth it.
