I have, in fact, been camping. And not the “glamping in a yurt with Wi-Fi and a Himalayan salt lamp” kind. No, I’m talking real camping—tents, tin foil dinners, and the kind of dirt that sticks to your soul.
I’ll never forget the first time my friend suggested it. I blinked. Slowly. Dramatically. “You mean… like outside? With bugs? Where bears live?”
Apparently, yes.
Now, as someone whose idea of “roughing it” typically involves a hotel with no room service, you can imagine my horror when I realized the only turndown service I’d be getting was the zipper on my sleeping bag. But—and here’s the plot twist—I kind of loved it. Not the whole “peeing in the woods” situation, obviously. That’s barbaric. But the rest? The stars? The late-night firelight storytelling? The way the kids laughed so hard they snorted marshmallow out their noses?
It reminded me why I do what I do. Why I built Voguegenics—not just to sparkle, but to live. To be present, muddy knees and all.
Camping taught me that self-care isn’t just bubble baths and serums (though, let’s be honest, I did sneak in a travel-size mist toner). Sometimes, it’s unplugging. It’s s’mores. It’s sitting by the fire with someone you love, not saying a word because the crackle says it all.
Would I do it again? Yes. But next time, I’m bringing sequined thermal socks. Because wilderness or not—this glow doesn’t come from nature alone.
