Let’s just say… technology didn’t just change my job—it studied me, mimicked me, and then politely escorted me out of the building.
I worked in the legal field, where I built a reputation not just for getting the job done—but for how I did it. I was the one clients remembered for my empathy. I was the one attorneys wanted on their team.
I could sit across from someone going through the hardest chapter of their life and offer more than legal assistance—I offered empathy and understanding. I brought compassion to the courtroom chaos, and a sharp eye for the little things everyone else overlooked.
When others skimmed, I dug deep. I found the detail that changed everything. I connected dots no software even knew to look for.
But then came the bots. I was part of the early wave of professionals helping to train AI—feeding it responses, shaping its understanding, refining its tone. I was essentially teaching it how to do my job. What I didn’t realize was that I was also writing my own pink slip in fluent machine language.
At first, it felt thrilling to be on the cutting edge. But then the reality hit: the very tasks I was paid to perfect were suddenly automated, streamlined, and assigned to an algorithm that didn’t need PTO, lattes, or lunch breaks. Efficient? Sure. But heartless? Also yes.
Here’s the twist though—I’m not bitter. (Okay, I was for a minute. A long minute.) But once I wiped off the sting, I realized that what technology replaces isn’t the heart of what we do—it’s the routine of it. My creativity? My perspective? My experience? Still 100% human, still valuable, still irreplaceable. (Take that, GPT.)
So yes, I lost my job to AI—ironically, one I helped train. But here’s the thing: technology can replicate processes, but it can’t replicate people. It doesn’t know what it feels like to be scared, to be vulnerable, or to fight for someone because you believe in them. I did.
And that—no matter how advanced the tech—can never be automated.
I won’t pretend I don’t miss it—because I do. I miss the thrill of the chase, the chess game of strategy and discovery. I miss the quiet satisfaction of finding that one overlooked detail that changed everything. I miss the clients who trusted me with their pain, and the camaraderie with attorneys who valued what I brought to the table. There’s something electric about working on a case that matters, with a team that feels like a second family. That kind of purpose doesn’t just fade—it stays with you.
So now, I take that passion and that heart and I build brands, blogs, and books to still try to help people. And if you’ve ever read something from me and laughed, cried, or nodded in recognition… well, that’s the one thing no algorithm can fake. Because while AI might have taken my job, it didn’t take my calling. And that? That’s something no machine will ever master.
