Little Things, Big Meaning

The author reflects on cherished personal belongings that hold deep sentimental value rather than monetary worth. Items like a chipped teacup, a beloved hoodie, and handwritten notes from children symbolize comfort and meaningful memories. These keepsakes represent the quiet joys of life, prompting readers to consider their own treasured items.

Daily writing prompt
What personal belongings do you hold most dear?

When it comes to the personal belongings I hold most dear, it’s not the shiny or expensive things that come to mind—it’s the small, seemingly ordinary bits of life that somehow carry my whole heart.

There’s a chipped teacup on my shelf that’s survived more moves than I have houseplants. It came from a thrift store years ago, but every time I drink from it, it feels like home. Then there’s a well-loved hoodie that should probably be retired, but it smells like comfort and late-night chats and quiet moments when everything was okay, even if only for a second.

I have a little box of handwritten notes from my kids—misspelled, chaotic, perfect. There’s one that just says “Mommy, you are a good cooker. Don’t cry today.” And I didn’t.

Tucked away are old playlists, ticket stubs, and the occasional dried flower from a random day that felt special for no reason. These aren’t just keepsakes—they’re proof that life has been good in quiet, gentle ways.

What about you? What’s the one random thing you’d never toss, even if Marie Kondo herself gave you the side-eye?
