Daily writing prompt
When are you most happy?

Picture this: it’s late at night, the house is quiet, and I’m perched on the couch in my sequined pajamas (yes, even pajamas deserve a little flair). The kids are asleep, Derek is engrossed in some obscure documentary about, I don’t know, vintage fishing reels, and I’m finally left alone with me time. In one hand, I’m holding a latte that I reheated twice because, let’s face it, the first time was never enough. In the other, a piece of dark chocolate that I have definitely not stashed away like a squirrel prepping for winter. This moment? Bliss.

But life isn’t always so picture-perfect. Sometimes, happiness is avoiding catastrophe. Like when I tiptoe across the living room in the dark and successfully avoid stepping on a LEGO that would make me rethink every single parenting choice I’ve ever made. Or when I reach into the fridge and pull out the exact ingredient I need for dinner without having to substitute it with something that technically works but makes everyone question my culinary skills. (No, kids, raisins do not belong in spaghetti – but it was a one-time experiment. Let it go.)

And then, there’s the sheer joy of the unexpected little wins. Like when I pull on my favorite pair of jeans, and they magically fit perfectly despite the holiday cookie “sampling” (which was definitely more extensive than I’d admit to). Or when I find an extra fry at the bottom of the bag, and it’s crispy enough to make me feel like I just won the lottery. Bonus points if no one else saw it so I don’t have to share.

Of course, happiness also strikes when I’m doing something truly selfless. Like ordering something from Amazon that I totally don’t need, just to “treat myself.” The joy of hearing the UPS truck rumble down the street is unmatched. It’s not about the package itself – though let’s be honest, it usually is – but the thrill of knowing I have something new waiting to brighten my day. And no, I won’t apologize for my minor obsession with online shopping. Derek, if you’re reading this, just look away.

Then there are those rare, fleeting moments when everything aligns perfectly: the coffee hits just right, the Wi-Fi is fast enough to stream without buffering, and Netflix finally recommends something that doesn’t look like it was curated by a confused robot. Add in the joy of everyone eating a meal I cooked without complaints, and you might as well call me euphoric.

So when am I most happy? When life feels like a sitcom, and I’m the star character improvising my way through the chaos. It’s not just the big, dramatic moments, like family milestones or vacations. It’s the little things – the ridiculous, laugh-out-loud moments when life feels just absurd enough to be delightful. Whether it’s finding my groove in a hectic day, enjoying a stolen moment of peace with my sequins sparkling in the moonlight, a laugh-out-loud catastrophe that becomes family lore or just marveling at the weird, wonderful chaos around me, happiness is in the everyday comedy of life. And you know what? I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
