What do you do to be involved in the community?

You know, community doesn’t always come with a name badge and a folding chair at the town hall (though I’ve been known to warm a few of those seats too). For me, being involved in the community means showing up where it matters—and not just when there’s a bake sale – it’s been about holding people together when everything else is falling apart.

I’ve led fundraisers, helped local families in crisis, and organized donation drives with the kind of precision that only a senior litigation paralegal who moonlights as a self-care evangelist can pull off. My house is the unofficial headquarters for care baskets, casseroles, and “you’re not alone” kits. I’ve spent more nights than I can count packing care boxes in silence, hands moving while my heart breaks alongside someone else’s. I’ve sat in ICU waiting rooms as both the family and the friend. I’ve brought meals to doorsteps with quiet prayers tucked beneath the foil, because sometimes the only thing you can offer is warmth—and faith that it will be enough.

But community involvement isn’t just about doing things—it’s about being someone. I make it a point to listen to people’s stories, support local creators, and vote in every single election, even the ones most people ignore. Why? Because women fought tooth and nail for that right, and I’ll never sit that out. I don’t just “get involved” in the community. I live in the layers of it. I’ve been the one making the late-night calls to organize emergency fundraisers when someone’s world came undone overnight. I’ve helped caregivers breathe again when they were running on empty because I am one. I know what it’s like to carry someone through illness, grief, or the slow unraveling of hope—and I know what it’s like to be carried.

My blog, Voguegenics, was never about aesthetics, it is an act of community. It was born from pain, built through perseverance, and offered up like a lantern—so someone else could find their way through the dark. Every free resource, every download, every heartfelt post isn’t marketing—it’s ministry. Those are pieces of myself I’m offering to the world in the hopes that someone, somewhere, feels seen. It’s my way of reaching through the screen and saying, “You matter. You’re not alone. We’re in this together.” And when someone tells me a journal helped them cry it out, plan their comeback, or find the courage to show up for themselves again? That’s the heartbeat of my community work.

So no, I’m not always the loudest voice in the room, but I’m there—offering tissues, tea, or a tactical plan—whatever the moment calls for. I celebrate their wins like they’re my own and I try really hard to be the kind of presence I once prayed for in my loneliest moments.

And….. I don’t do any of it for recognition. I do it because this is what love looks like when it shows up. And that, my friend, is community in action.

If you’ve ever needed someone to show up for you—or you’re the one constantly holding it all together—I see you. And you don’t have to do it alone. We’ve created a library of free resources to support you through life’s heavy moments, small wins, and everything in between. 💛

Dorey Duncan Scott Senior Litigation Paralegal
Hi! I’m Dorey Duncan Scott, a mother of three, wife and fashion entrepreneur. I started my career in fashion back in the early 90’s when I did print, still and runway modeling. I studied Fashion Merchandising, Music Business and Marketing, while also obtaining certificates in such industry-necessary areas such as make-up, styling and runway choreography. In addition, I had work as a spokesmodel for several brands, appearing in print and in person. As a former model, turned senior litigation paralegal, artist manager and on-air personality with a passion for fashion, beauty, and personal development, I bring a unique combination of style, strategic thinking, and legal expertise to my work. My years navigating the legal world have sharpened my attention to detail, while my experience and passion for fashion, beauty, and personal development drives my desire to help others feel empowered and help them in their journey toward self-empowerment. My experience in the fashion world has taught me the power of confidence.
