Male Olympic Swimmer in Blue Pool Representing Top Summer Olympic Sports to Watch
Daily writing prompt
What Olympic sports do you enjoy watching the most?

Easy. Anything that makes me gasp, cheer, and contemplate taking up a new hobby for all of five minutes before remembering I like snacks and air conditioning. Olympic season always makes me feel like I could’ve gone pro in something if only I hadn’t peaked in high school gym class. But every four years (or two, if you count the Winter Games—which I do, religiously), I glue myself to the screen, shout at the TV like I have a gold medal in judging, and mentally prepare for my highly competitive latte break.

Let’s talk Olympics. My absolute favorites?

First up? Figure skating. It’s elegant, it’s dramatic, it’s basically couture on ice. While not part of the Summer Olympics, it was actually one of the first Olympic sports open to women (in 1908!), and that blend of athleticism and grace still captivates me every time the Winter Games roll around. It’s sequins and storytelling with a side of triple axels—and I’m here for it. I will absolutely sit through reruns of those triple axels like they’re cliffhangers from a Bridgerton finale. Bonus points to the skaters for sequins and overly intense stares before a routine.

Then there’s gymnastics, which is just human magic. It’s like watching human poetry in motion with just a sprinkle of danger. The flips, the power, the precision, the balance beam, the tiny powerhouse women who could bench press my hopes and dreams—and the drama! I live for it. I yell “STUCK IT!” from my couch like I’m their coach and not someone who pulled a muscle tying my shoe.

Swimming is a close third. Why? Because it’s one of the few times the phrase “wet and wild” isn’t about my shampoo. Those athletes are dolphins in disguise. It’s fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat excitement that is part speed, part endurance, and part underwater mermaid magic. And those slow-mo replays and underwater camera angle? Pure art. Iconic. Cinematic. That camera crew deserves a medal too. Someone at least give it an Oscar.

And finally—don’t sleep on synchronized diving. It’s like watching poetry fall into water, and I audibly “oooh” when they make the tiniest splash, as if I have any idea what I’m talking about. I don’t know how they move so perfectly together mid-air like elegant little water fairies, but I’m obsessed. When they hit the water with barely a ripple? I get full-body goosebumps like I’m watching the season finale of a really good show.

So whether it’s flips, dives, or swims, the Olympics always find a way to make me feel like an armchair expert with zero credentials but 100% enthusiasm. In short: give me glitter, flips, and feats of pure superhuman willpower. I’ll be in the corner with my latte, fake judging every landing like I didn’t just trip over my own Louis Vuitton 20 minutes ago.

So What About You?

Are you a track-and-field junkie? A fencing fanatic? Do you get sucked into judo matches or become emotionally attached to a team sport you didn’t know existed until 10 minutes ago? That’s the magic of the Olympics—it turns all of us into passionate, over-caffeinated sports analysts.

Drop your Olympic faves in the comments. I promise I’ll try not to judge (unless it’s curling in summer—then we might need a chat).
