Who Are the Biggest Influences in My Life
Daily writing prompt
Who are the biggest influences in your life?

When it comes to influence, I think of it as the people who’ve left an indelible mark on my character, values, and perspective. These influences are a mix of individuals I know personally, those I admire from afar, and even fictional characters who’ve sparked something within me.

First, let’s start with the obvious—the people closest to me. My family has been a cornerstone of influence. My husband, Derek, for his unwavering encouragement and grounded approach to life, balances out my creative whirlwind. My kids—Zayne, Zarek, and Zavary—continually inspire me with their curiosity and resilience. They remind me daily that growth is a lifelong process.

Then there’s my late grandmother, whose poise, warmth, and quiet strength taught me that grace under pressure isn’t just a phrase; it’s a way of life. I still hear her voice in my head when I’m about to make a decision, saying, “Do it with heart, or don’t bother.”

I owe much of my understanding of law to my parents, who instilled in me a respect for justice and critical thinking from an early age, and to the brilliant attorneys I’ve had the privilege of working alongside, who have shaped my expertise and professionalism over the years.

Beyond the personal realm, I find inspiration in public figures and authors who champion empowerment and authenticity. Women like Brené Brown, who taught me the power of vulnerability, or fashion icons like Iris Apfel, who reminded me that style knows no age limit, have been profound guiding lights.

Lastly, I’d be remiss not to mention fictional influences—characters like Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice or Jo March from Little Women who showed me that boldness, wit, and staying true to oneself can rewrite narratives.

Influence, to me, is fluid. It’s not just about the people who’ve been in my life for decades, but also about fleeting encounters and new inspirations. A kind stranger, a poignant quote, or even a moment of clarity from a guided meditation (yes, V’Luma plugs itself seamlessly here) can shape the way I see the world.

What about you? Who are your biggest influences?

Hi! I’m Dorey Duncan Scott, a mother of three, wife and fashion entrepreneur. I started my career in fashion back in the early 90’s when I did print, still and runway modeling. I studied Fashion Merchandising, Music Business and Marketing, while also obtaining certificates in such industry-necessary areas such as make-up, styling and runway choreography. In addition, I had work as a spokesmodel for several brands, appearing in print and in person. As a former model, turned senior litigation paralegal, artist manager and on-air personality with a passion for fashion, beauty, and personal development, I bring a unique combination of style, strategic thinking, and legal expertise to my work. My years navigating the legal world have sharpened my attention to detail, while my experience and passion for fashion, beauty, and personal development drives my desire to help others feel empowered and help them in their journey toward self-empowerment. My experience in the fashion world has taught me the power of confidence.
