The Balancing Act: Work, Home, and the Art of Not Losing Your Mind

Balancing work and home life resembles yoga on a moving train, with no perfect solution. As a senior paralegal and caregiver, I've found a personal rhythm through scheduling everything and setting boundaries. I honor transitions and allow myself grace, understanding that some days I thrive, while others require self-care.

How do you balance work and home life?

Balancing work and home life is a lot like trying to do yoga on a moving train—you might hit a pose, but most of the time, you’re just trying not to faceplant.

As a senior litigation paralegal, caregiver, wife, mom to three spectacularly unique kids (pageant queens and NASCAR fans included), and the woman behind Voguegenics… let’s just say my calendar deserves combat pay. But somehow, amidst deadlines, doctor’s appointments, and the occasional glitter explosion, I’ve found a rhythm. Not perfect, but perfectly mine.

I stopped chasing balance like it was a finish line.

Let’s be real: balance isn’t a static state. It’s more like plate-spinning on a Tuesday with a latte in one hand and a Post-it stuck to your butt. Some days I crush it. Other days, I eat cereal over the sink and hope no one needs me for 10 minutes. Both days are valid.

I calendar everything.

If it’s not on the calendar, it doesn’t exist. That includes “cry in the car,” “meditate like a monk for 7 minutes,” and “date night even if we just watch Law & Order reruns in pajamas.” Scheduling home-life things with the same priority as client calls? That’s the trick.

I use boundaries like bumpers on a bowling lane.

Work stops when it stops. Even if I love it (which I usually do), I’ve learned to shut the laptop, put on a face mask, and remind myself I’m not just my to-do list. And if you call me after 8 PM about work? You’re getting voicemail and vibes.

I honor transitions.

Between work mode and mom mode, I have a buffer ritual. It could be a short walk, a playlist, or a few moments with my journal. It helps me reset before jumping into the next identity.

And most importantly: I give myself grace.

Some weeks I’m Voguegenics CEO material. Other weeks, I’m a bathrobe burrito who needs to cry in a bubble bath. Either way, I’m still showing up. For me. For my family. For this weird, beautiful life.
